Can you hear it in the distance? The iPhone 5 storm is brewing, but still no one is quite sure of the specs or when it’ll finally hit. Was that an 8MP flash of lightning? Probably.
Yes, as we draw closer still to the iPhone 5 announcement, suddenly we’re all in disagreement about what’s going down. Let’s recap this week’s juiciest iPhone 5 rumours, shall we?
This time last week everyone seemed to pretty much agree that the iPhone 5 would arrive in October, with an 8MP camera, dual-core A5 processor and possibly a 4in screen.
Actually, that much people still seem willing to accept. But it’s when you get into the specifics about naming, and design, and is-there-one-or-two that it all goes to pot.
On the one hand, we’ve got 9to5mac weighing in with a teardrop iPhone 5, alongside a budget iPhone 4 that’ll take on the lower-end Android range. That’d kinda make sense, actually. However, it’s suggested that the teardrop design is causing production problems, with possible delays till 2012. Release date? October 7.
On the other hand, we’ve got Greek site DigitalLife telling Pocket-lint that there will be no iPhone 5 next month. Instead we’ll get an iPhone 4S with – wait for it – an 8MP camera and A5 processor.
Er, ok. So the only difference there is the name, right? Presumably their point is that the 4S will be similar in design to the iPhone 4, with a radically different (possibly teardrop) iPhone 5 to follow at some point. Release date for the iPhone 4S? October 21.
If the Greeks are right, it begs the question: Why the hell has it taken so long for Apple to unveil it? A 15-month wait for a modest upgrade. Hmm...
And there’s a third hand to this iPhone 5 rumour mutant. Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair reckons the iPhone 5 will have the same specs as above, but specifically pooh-poohs the idea of a new cheaper iPhone. Instead, the existing iPhone 4 will drop to 8GB with a $99 price tag.
And finally, just to confuse things a little further, All Things Digital’s sources are adamant that Apple will unveil the iPhone 5 on October 4, with the coveted smartphone going on sale “within a few weeks”.
So we’re all agreed on:
- 8MP camera, dual-core A5 processor, 4in display
- an October release
But we can’t agree on:
- similar in design to the iPhone 4 = iPhone 4S, or...
- radically different with a teardrop design = iPhone 5
And the cheap guy will either be:
- a brand new phone, or…
- an 8GB iPhone 4
