My iPhone 5 battery is so unpredictable, sometimes cutting out at 20%.
A colleague says I might be eligible for a replacement, but how can I tell? Should I just make an appointment with the so-called Geniuses?

Yes, that could be the proper step. But lemme ask: percentages aside: how much time do you get out of your iPhone 5?
If you recently updated the OS, the battery gauge software was wiped, and it may take a while
to get correct % again. A reboot might also help!
If however the phone has ridiculously short battery life you may qualify for a new battery, assuming your phone's not too old
