iPhone 5 to rock 4.6in Retina display?

iPhone 5 to rock 4.6in Retina display? Now that the new iPad is here, the next big iDevice will presumably be the iPhone 5. Er, unless an iPad mini drops in the meantime.

In any case, Reuters is relaying news from the Maeil Business Newspaper suggesting that Apple is contemplating a 4.6in Retina display for the next iPhone. Wowsers.

All iPhones to date – that’s the iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS, 4 and 4S – have had 3.5in displays. A move to 4.6in would mark a hefty jump of 1.1in.

The report is a bit vague, and fails to mention, for example, if Apple would still offer a 3.5in iPhone 5. We suspect that’d be the case, as – if the ludicrous iPhone sales figures tell us anything – many people are perfectly happy with the current size.

There’s certainly a trend for flagships to have monstrous displays these days. Mobile World Congress saw a host of large devices introduced, including the 4.7in HTC One X, 4.7in LG Optimus 4X HD and 4.5in Huawei Ascend D1 Quad.

What do you think, Mobotniks? Would you be interested in a 4.6in iPhone 5? I used to think 3.5in was perfect, but after making the move to the 4.3in HTC Desire HD, I don’t think I could go smaller. Bring on the bigness.

4 inches / 10 Zentimeter etcetc

4.6 is too big. 4 is ideal. No debate #ModPower

You call that 'news'? :p No offence, Lewis... it's a rumour-update...

By the way, this is super-unlikely. The iPhone's screen has a fatter resolution (3:2) than current large Androids (16:9). This means even with a really small bezel, a 4.6" iPhone will be as wide if not wider than the HTC One X. So Apple would probably have to change the aspect ratio, which developers would not appreciate.

This is probably for the S3.

Not the first time Samsung employees confused Apple products with their own.

So what resolution would a 4.6 screen need to be to have retina status?

Retina being 300+ PPI, the nearest reasonable resolutions would be either be 1280x720 @ 319 PPI or 1280x800 @ 328 PPI

As a reference the iPhone 4/4S has a PPI of 329 PPI on a 3.5" screen and if Apple kept the resoution the same (960x640) and upped the screen size to 4.6" the PPI would drop to 250, well below what can be counted as a "Retina Display" on a device that's held so close the the eyes.

Neither of those suggestions match the iPhone's 3:2 resolution, so every single app would need retooling lest they have black bars or get stretched.

It would either be 1152x768 @300 PPI or 1280x854 @ 334 PPI (the 720p beater as I'm sure Apple would boast if they used this resolution). Either way, I still think this is an unlikely size for Apple.

Damn, I'd totally forgotten about the fact the iPhone is 3:2 not 16:9, my bad.

smecky01  Mar. 23, 2012 at 00:44

Definitely would like to see a bigger screen than 3.5, 4inch or 4.2 would be nice. X)

Pondlife  Mar. 23, 2012 at 00:58

Think they've backed themselves into a corner though, will want to keep the retina tag but surely won't want to add yet another resolution so soon?
Would give more room to fit the quad core gpu in though...

As for "if the ludicrous iPhone sales figures tell us anything – many people are perfectly happy with the current size" not necessarily as it's the only size to get it in, it's the only one they can buy. Doesn't mean they are all happy about it.

This is definitely not an iPhone screen. I'm 100% sure of it.

I'll even put £50 into Mobot's chosen charity if it turn out to be.

Mobot's chosen charity is >>> me. But I happen to agree.
