Seems like with contract only in store.
US iPhone 5 can be used on Sprint, Verizon and ATT. It appears that Apple did not know which network phone will end up at and shipped them unlocked. However, putting any other SIM in the phone results in no service. This is from people that tried putting SIM cards into CDMA phones.
I would assume that newer batch of phone fixed above nuisance.

So, Applecart... if your heading to the US, bring a UK prepay-sim, and try it. If that is possible...
