iPhone 5? Pah, that is SOOOO 2011. Actually, we think it is although we won't actually know if it even exists yet until October 4th. But ever the forward planners, we're looking forward to iPhone 6! And apparently, they're going to have curved screens.
Yup, we're serious. A screen made of curved glass. The next big thing!
That's according to a post over on DigiTimes which says that a number of manufacturers are gearing up to release products featuring curved glass in the first half of next year.
The piece cites sources in the glass industry as saying that Cupertino's competitors are looking for a competitive edge but that Apple itself has also bought glass polishing equipment for suppliers in preparation.
It raises questions within the glass industry as to whether this is simply a fad or something that's here to stay. Apple wouldn't be the first - in fact, HTC's Sensation - which has been out for months - features curved glass and whilst it looks nice, it's very subtle and doesn't really add anything that we can see to the user experience.
We'd venture that it is obviously way too early to treat as fact, considering Apple hasn't even announced the iPhone 5 or 4S. And once that is done, how long will it be before iP6 is out there? By that time, phones may be transporting us into space by means of a teleport app.
However, one thing we can confidently say is that where Apple goes, many other manufacturers seem to follow. We're not saying that's how it should be - just that that's the way it is and you can see how iPhone features are present on handsets that wouldn't have been before Apple introduced its first device.
Who knows - maybe Samsung will beat Apple to launching a curved glass phone. We can only imagine the legal ruckus that would cause!
