Can I use my iphone sim card and data plan in an ipad?

I am thinking of buying an ipad, but a bit confused about all the options. If I just buy a basic 3G ipad from the Apple store, can I use my iphone sim card in it, for the data minutes? Or do I need to have a separate data plan just for the ipad?

If I need a separate data plan, is it best to buy a contract bundle, or can I still buy the ipad from the Apple store and buy a separate data plan sim card?

Any help would be appreciated.

If it works with my iphone sim, then that would be perfect.

Ideally, I'd like a duplicate of my iphone sim card so that I wouldn't have to switch them about too...

I asked Apple care here in Ireland exactly that question last year, and they said yes, I could do that. However, I have a prepay sim and data dd-on.
Technically, I can't see how it'd matter. If you lost your contract phone, you'd be free to replace it yourself. The network just wants your money at the end of the month.

No, networks do not allow 2 sims for the same number - it would apparently cause techno-mayhem. There are people who claim it works for them, but from all I have read and heard they are lying or weirdly lucky.

Bring on the techno-mayhem!

Some networks offer the service of a second sim with the same number (Orange deffo do, although only for business customers and at a monthly fee) Id just stick to switching sims
