Yes, it is possible to increase the text size on an iPhone 5S.
To do that open the Settings app, tap on General, and on the next screen hit "Accessibility".
In Accessibility you can increase the font size, make all text Bold, increase overall Contrast, etc etc... Well hidden, "Accessibility" shows some interesting features. Text size aside, you can, e.g. change the entire display, system-wide, to black & white. A good thing when you need to conserve those last bits of battery life while you're nowhere near a charger. B&W saves a LOT of energy.
