Do old iPhones have iMessage?

Do old iPhones like the iPhone 3GS have iMessage?
I have a few friends with iPhones but their texts only ever come up as texts - i.e. always green, never blue.

iMsg is avaiable to everyone running iOS5 or later and according to wiki works on iPhone 3GS

It could be they dont have data or have turned data off when texting (or have set their phones to prefer sending text messges) or havent updated their phones in an age

or that they didn't update to ios5...

Any compelling reason they should be using the gimmick anyway?

Yep, as already said: they need, at least, iOS5; and iMessage needs to be enabled in setting (which it is by default).
