Why don't iPhones have microSD slots?

Why don't iPhones have microSD slots? Is it really just so Apple can make money charging more for storage?

Largely that, being able to charge £160 for 48gb of storage is a pretty handy thing for profit margin especially how little such memory costs now. Is also easier for the os to manage a fixed memory structure and the quality/speed can be assured to be similar.
