iPod Touch & Advantages of Jailbreaking

I'm considering swapping my 2nd gen iPod Touch for a 4th gen iPod Touch so I can run all the latest apps, have more storage and have access to iOS5. I was just wondering if anyone knows when the iPod Touch renewal time is (as in the iPhone's is usually June). I don't want to buy a 4th gen one only for the 5th gen to come out in a few months.

Also, what's the advantages of Jailbreaking iOS5? Most of the features that I had installed via Jailbreak on my iPhone 3G seem to have been implemented by Apple themselves over the past couple of years (such as pull-down notifications etc). So what cool new features have become available to spice up iOS?

Any help would be much appreciated, I'm not exactly a massive "Apple guy", as many of the regulars will know, but I do like the iPod Touch and it'd be nice to have access to the latest apps and iOS versions again.

Thanks in advance guys :).

matt as a mod you should know this is a 'mobile' forum :p

but if we are going by last year the ipod touch came with the ifony rehash in october they are normally released end of summer around september..

Well, matt...
The two reasons I'd jailbreak are iFile to get a semblance of mass storage going, and My3G to spoof WiFi. Oh, and reason 2.5: SBSettings.

Obviously My3G is not needed on an iPod Touch.
So, what's left in terms of Why-jailbreak is not much. Unless you count installing cheeky apps from cheeky sources.

File transfer would be primary reason to jailbreak. I wonder if there is an app that allows you to sync music with something other than iCloud. If there is one you would need to jailbreak it.

Treab, the iTouch is more mobile than all of the Wi-Fi only tablets that get mentioned on Mobot...aka HP TouchPad. It contains the same wireless technology (Wi-Fi and Bluetooth), but comes in a far smaller package, therefore is more mobile. The 4th gen iTouch is, after all, just an iPhone 4 with a worse camera and no cell radio.

Thanks for the information guys, I definitely want mass storage, I hate iTunes and would much rather just drag and drop using windows explorer. I also love my emulators, can't get enough of mid-90s gaming haha ;).

Does jailbreaking still give you access to all the cool visual tweaks? Such as 5x5 icons and stuff.

Oh and I know it's not the world's favourite device for rumours but has anyone heard anything about an iTouch 5th generation? I know the 4th gen has been out quite a while now...

Yep, jailbreaking still gives you the icon grid thingy, themes, scrollable "infinity dock" etc etc And with Dreamboard you can get a HTC Sense themes :p

Oh, and don't wait too long, or you get one with iOS 5.2, and the wait for jailbreak starts all over ;)

Thanks for the info, Jan. I've got a £50 voucher for Currys which starts on the 12th of February, that's make a brand new 32gb iTouch with a full warranty and proof of purchase (unlike eBay) £179.99.

I'm guessing iOS 5.2 isn't expected in the next week and a half?

I've already found out how to JB the iPod Touch, it doesn't look particularly hard in all honesty. Sounds like it does still enable some pretty cool features though :).

JanSt / MOD  Feb. 3, 2012 at 15:31

No, I think 5.2 isn't expected to hit before March/April - if that.

matt101101 / MOD  Feb. 3, 2012 at 15:33

Ahh cool, my voucher expires on the 26th of Feb so I'll definitely either have one or have decided against the whole idea by March/April :).

Just a little update, I bought a white iPod Touch 4th gen off eBay for £210, bargain!

Treab  Feb. 4, 2012 at 15:41

210? thought you could get on for 179.99 at currys... (has he gone slightly mad...)

matt are the voices back? you know the ones... the ones saying your a mod and have power? we were working on bringing you back to reality..

matt101101 / MOD  Feb. 4, 2012 at 15:48

Nah, £180 was for a 32gb, I got a 64gb. I've not gone that mad yet ;)!

If I get bored of it I can always put it back on eBay and make my money back (including fees). The seller was good as well, 600+ feedback 100% positive.

Treab  Feb. 4, 2012 at 15:50

600+ feedback 100% positive.

hmm..i always avoid those type of guys... i only use guys with 95-98% reason... nothing is ever perfect... 100% positive when you reach that level usually means its dodgy...

matt101101 / MOD  Feb. 4, 2012 at 15:54

eBay only counts your feedback from the past 12 months, that's why. No doubt at some point one of his 600+ transactions has gone bad but his feedback looks genuine from the ones I could be bothered to scroll through and read.

I've got a tracking number that works already as well and I only bought the thing this morning. We'll wait and see what turns up in the post on Monday haha :D.

Oh and yes, it's in the hands of Royal Fail's Special Delivery service...

Treab  Feb. 4, 2012 at 15:57

could be worse... i had my laptop sent by yodel... who thought i was out so 'put it in a safe place' even though it was signed for...

that safe place was behind my bin... which was able to be seen from the street ooh 3 feet away lol.

matt101101 / MOD  Feb. 4, 2012 at 16:15

My TouchPad was sent by Yodel, thankfully I was in and saw the van outside and the driver was an honest one who hadn't decided to steal my tablet (there were reports of such behaviour on HUKD).

Parcel Force left my sister's SatNav behind the bin at my parent's house. Though they are a subsidiary of Royal Fail so I'm not particularly surprised by such behaviour.

Treab  Feb. 4, 2012 at 16:28

i did see the van... it was a white van with no name on it... even city link have dedicated vans with their logo on it...

i will say a big up to city link never had an issue with them and even when i caused them hassle (kinda) they did well for me.

matt101101 / MOD  Feb. 4, 2012 at 16:31

Yodel vans (the branded ones), are green and orange. It's the kind of colour scheme that makes you think "how the hell are they going to sell those on?".

Personally I've never had an issue with Yodel, though that may be because they've only ever delivered to me once...I'm willing to believe the many horror stories I've heard about them though.

Treab  Feb. 4, 2012 at 16:32

Only used them once myself... and to find a 400 quid computer put behind a bin (for safe keeping) is stupid to a whole new level...

matt101101 / MOD  Feb. 4, 2012 at 16:48

At least they didn't decide to steal it themselves...I've heard Yodel's warehouses "lose" quite a lot of valuable deliveries.

Treab  Feb. 4, 2012 at 16:54

even city link delivered my 37" toshiba tv to my house with a smile :(

gawd bless you city link...

matt101101 / MOD  Feb. 4, 2012 at 17:04

I wouldn't like to carry TVs from a van to a house very often, they weigh a ton.

Treab  Feb. 4, 2012 at 17:12

we helped him when he arrived... wasnt too bad i got it to my room alone... wasnt soo heavy...

matt101101 / MOD  Feb. 7, 2012 at 15:42

It arrived this morning (only a day late, not too bad for Royal Mail). It's in almost perfect condition and had a screen protector already fitted (the screen underneath is in mint condition. Absolute bargain for £210 considering it's a 64GB the 32GB normally retails for £220.
