Is it possible to have an itunes account without having to give out your credit card number?

Browse the iTunes Store and attempt to download a free app (like Facebook), this will ask you to sign-in or register. Registration will give you the option to not enter any payment details since all you're doing is grabbing a free app.

If you register without trying to download something free then it won't give you the no payment details option.

Yes, it is possible. You can still buy things using an iTunes gift card if you don't want Apple to have your credit card details (or you don't have a credit card).

When did they change that? Up to last year here in Ireland you DID need a credit card to set up your account. You didn't have to use it (iTunes gift cards instead), but you needed to enter a valid CC at registration.
And recently I found out why - there billing ain't fool-proof. Had a prepay cc registered and a gift voucher. At one point there were only a few cents left on both. Still, the mac appstore let me 'buy' an app... :p then they frantically blocked my account. Oops.

tHIS DOESN'T WORK. I've tried installing a free app but I keep getting asked for card details This is really bad of apple. I don't want my card details used ever! I would only use an i tunes card but as i dont have one right nw I should still bve given the option. Shame on Apple, shame!

Yep, I thought so. Doesn't work here in Ireland, either. And yes, it's shameful.

I've jut tried it. This minute.

Went to iTunes, clicked 'Sign In' and entered my details, saw this on the next page: http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/5646/itunespayment.png

Didn't want to use a credit card so I cancelled out, went to the app store and attempted to download BBC iPlayer which is free. Since I wasn't signed in I had to create an account. Filled in the same details as before but this was on the next page.

Note the 'None' button next to payment options.

Weird - I tried that yesterday with a new account. Didn't work.
It's like the Mac appstore trick to download stuff that came preinstalled on your Mac(e.g. to download Lion in order to burn a recovery disk). Some people can launch the appstore while pressing cmd or ctr - works for me only sometimes

Hi you can do it if you have a gift card already. I did it for my daughter the other day. Just click on click and buy option and it lets you put the gift card number it there then sets it up, no hassle!

What a piece if sh*t the itunes registration process is. I've tried ENDLESSLY to get it to accept my gift card and it won't. Tells me I have to input a Credit card number, which I don't want to do. Then when it finally gives me the "none" option for Credit card details, it STILL tells me the credit card number is wrong and that I've put in the wrong security cod (I haven't)...AAAHHH! Sometimes it just stalls me right at the Country of Origin screen by not giving me a "next" option. What a crock!
