Why won't iTunes music play on my Xbox?

Sorry if this is more of an Xbox question, but when I buy music for my iPhone via iTunes and transfer it to my external hard drive to play through my Xbox - it won't play the tracks. Is that iTunes' fault? No such problems when ripping music from CDs.

Music bought from apple's iTunes store are in Apple's own format - Your Microsoft Xbox won't recognise the format and won't play them. You could stream them or convert them. Have a dig on google, there are plenty of options. http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=play+itunes+on+xbox

Yeah it can, though not as simple as it should be

You can play MP3 files from your iPod on any Xbox 360 console. To listen to music stored in the Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) format, you need to download the free Optional Media Update from Xbox LIVE Marketplace

Go to Bing, and search for "Optional Media Update."

Select Optional Media Update.

Select Optional Media Update again.

Select Confirm Download. The download is free.

Once your download is complete, select Continue, and then return to the Xbox Dashboard.

Of course, iOS and Mac do just as many silly things...

Despite having the update I initially forgot all about it *looks around sheepishly* only found I had it when I went to install it after posting that. *goes for lie down*
