Jailbreak/Unlock & Tips and Tricks

Anyone else out there jailbroken? Wanted to set up a discussion for those that have, and maybe if people have questions we can answer them. Could share sources/repos etc, tips and tricks (whether jailbroken or not).

Great idea :)

Good idea, as good as the iPhone Dev team are at Jailbreaking I do find the information on their website difficult to decipher at times, for example I currently have a Jailbroken and Unlocked iPhone using Ultrasnow on 4.1 and I would like to update to 4.2 (or even 4.3 soon) but I dont want to risk the unlock so want to keep the same baseband, it was only after quite a lot of googling that I worked out that you cant do that yet (so a good job I checked!)

Very true. Partly I blame the competition amongs breakers for the lack of coherence... I bricked an iPhone 4 before Christmas, because I simply lost patience and got tired of googling LOL...
Similar with the Android rooters though.

Ouch, an expensive bricking!

Also, another rant, why is it a lot of the jailbreaks are better supported on Mac OSX? I mean, I realise that it is a well supported platform but surely it would make sense to support the most commonly used OS, Windows, or have I missed something?

It's extremely hard to brick an iPhone, I',m sure you'll be able to recover it.

I'm still on iOS 4.1, jailbroken using greepois0n, it was easy, just a couple of clicks and you're done. Can't upgrade to iOS 4.2 yet though, as there is no reliable untethered jailbreak yet for Windows users. Still waiting for Comex to come out with his untethered jailbreak, but it looks like he is waiting for iOS 4.3 to come out, and just skipping 4.2.

Once you gait jailbroken, would recommend installing sbsettings as a minimum - it's a killer feature being able to swipe the titlebar and easily turn on/off wifi, 3G, bluetooth etc without having to navigate a bunch of menus. Avoid any Winterboard modifications/themes, they drain your battery.

For all your jailbreaking and unlocking needs go to iclarified.com

It's a great site with easy to understand tutorials and links to the required firmwares.

Agree, Codify, sbsettings an absolute must. And yes, the phone was bricked...long story. It was fixed though.
I thought on iPhone 4 winterboard themes were acceptable batterywise. I like the iBlank bookmark shortcuts to create free space on the homescreen.

Is there a way of unlocking an iphone 4 to use on all networks for free without jailbreaking?

maybe a glitch with the page, when i refresh it reposts my comment so sorry for the multiple posts

jskyner- you need to jailbreak your phone before you can unlock it. But don't worry about jailbreaking, it's safe and reversible

I have had my iPhone jailbroken for over 2 years now (both 3G/3Gs/4). And I would not have it any other way. Here are a few of my favourite packages:
Quickreply - awesome little SMS feature, allows you to reply to messages without closing your current application/video etc. Although I now use biteSMS.
biteSMS - a complete SMS app overlay, includes a very nice quickreply feature of its own, and the immense quick compose. Just use the volume button and press the icon to create an SMS from anywhere! Without exiting what you are currently doing.
Synchronicity - Allows you to still use your phone whilst syncing with iTunes, use all features apart from the iPod itself.
SBSettings - like previously mentioned you can access system settings quickly with the swipe over the clock. Turn off Wifi/Data/auto rotation etc. With loads of add ons to control other features!
Covert - enables private browsing in safari
iProtect - password any apps you wish.
MarkThatMessage - adds timestamp to all text messages
MultiIconMover - allows you to move more than one application at a time.
Tabs+ - more tabs for safari
YourTube/YourTube2 - allows downloads in the native YouTube app. Then you can add videos directly into your iPod library. Great for TV shows and Music Videos.

im using winterboard on my iphone 4 and theres no power drain at all

most newer jailbreaks are simple, plug in and follow the onscreen instructions.
the problems only come when you try to restore and get an error in itunes, a quick google of the code will sort you out tho.

id reccomend folderenhancer from cydia

my top 5 must have tweaks/apps

Great news, the iphone dev team have announced an untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 using an old exploit first used in the 4.1 Jailbreak, more news to follow

Hi all,
I have a few questions if anyone can help!
I have a jailbroken 3gs which is on 3.0.1 firmware, n im afraid to update as i dont want to lose jailbreak! :(
1) my phone is unlocked to all networks, will i lose that when i update?
2)can i choose to update to 4.1 so i can still jailbreak, or will itunes force me to update to 4.2?
3) will i have to reinstall intune apps or will they remain? (as i have tomtom on the 3gs but no longer have it on my current itunes account)
Any help would be appreciated! :)

greenpoison is now released for jailbreaking the iphone 4 on 4.2.1 i really want to try this and be able to customize my iphone. does anyone know if using greenpoison to jb will void warranty? (in the sense that it will change the baseband or something so it wont go back to stock when you restore via itunes)

Codify  Feb. 16, 2011 at 13:47

ss3000 - greenpois0n won't touch your baseband. The new iPhone official software iOS 4.2.1 will upgrade your baseband, but that's not a problem unless you need to have your phone unlocked to use other mobile networks.
