Bad news everyone. The game with the coolest name in the entire history of our medium has been rebranded. Machine Gun Jetpack is now unfortunately known as Jetpack Joyride, but with Fruit Ninja devs Halfbrick at the helm, you can be sure of an absolute corker nonetheless.
As the chiselled action hero Barry Steakfries, your raison d'etre is to nick a wicked awesome Jetpack and fly around a scrolling, infinite level - doing your best to get as far as possible before hitting a laser, electric fence or guided missile. Jetpack Joyride is one of those one-button games that 'challenges' you to tap the screen in order to increase altitude, but completely outpaces everything else in the genre thanks to mechanical competency and some impressive unlocks.
Most one-button games are somewhat lacking in depth (which is a bit of an understatement, really), but not so here. Not by a long shot. Barry can leap into a selection of vehicles including a stomping mech, gravity-bending cybersuit and money-excreting profit bird, each of which feels completely unique and relevant despite being controlled by a single finger. The randomised nature of the levels and the vehicles make Jetpack Joyride a del it for scant minutes or epic marathons.
As well as striving for leaderboard distance, players collect persistent currency that can be spent on a huge array of unlockables. Many of them prove useful like turbo boosts or coin-attracting magnets, whereas others are entirely cosmetic. And entirely awesome, it has to be said. If you ever wanted to rag around a laser powered rocket pack wearing a top hat, your ship has just come in. And if not, what's wrong with you?
Finally, you'll also be able to gain ranks by completing a varied array of achievement-esque missions. They provide some much-needed variety in what could have been a very repetitive experience and do so exceptionally well.
- Packed with depth and variety
