Jiayu G4- £100 quad core, dual sim phone

Jiayu have announced their Jiayu G4 officially. No release date but it is due to go on sale for £100 in China during Q1/2. (rumours say May)

Here are the specs

4.7" OGS IPS Display @ 1280x720
1.2Ghz MTK6589 Quad Core Processor
2GB RAM + ? ROM (Micro SD Card support)
12mp rear camera + ? Front camera
Wi-Fi, GPS, DC-HSPA+ (42mbps)
Android 4.1/2
1800mAh (8.2mm thick)or 3000mAh battery (10mm thick).
Dual Sim capable (Dual Active)

for £100 that's not bad. Going by the Jiayu G3 it should cost around £150 to import the 1800mAh version. The 3000mAh version does not have a price yet. (The phone comes with two batteries anyway.

Looks quite tidy, bezel looks thin...
Presume it's not just in that white colour

AhmadCentral  Jan. 3, 2013 at 14:29

Nope, all their previous phones came in both Black and White so i don't see them changing that any time soon. In fact the G3 came in a few limited edition colours as well. (like brown....)

I think the bezel is 1.7mm thin but don't quote me on that.

Here we go-

ultra-narrow border design, narrow screen frame unilateral to 2.8-2.9 mm (1.8 mm capacitive screen border).

so 3mm between bottom of screen to base. and 1.8mm from edge of screen to edge of phone.

Although i could be misinterpreting that.

Looks better than the SGS3 - in the pic at least.

Well when the Jiayu G3 was announced it looked like this
http://www.gizchina.com/wp-content/uploads/images/jiayu-g3-chinese-phone-on-sale-642x300.jpg

and what we got was this-

They removed the logo at the bottom^

so i think it's near enough the final design.

So does sh*tting on the floor; the S3 was obviously designed by lawyers (trust me, we're not an artistic bunch), not a designer.

Unless it's hideously expensive, it does sound like the obvious choice.

For me, battery capacity is more important than whether its quad core or not (provided of course it's no slouch)

AhmadCentral  Jan. 3, 2013 at 18:44

I wouldn't mind a 14mm phone with a 5000mAh+ battery :P

If they ship the bigger capacity one with just the one battery could even be similar price

interesting phone, agreed that with a quadcore the 1800 battery does seem kind of light although whats the theory of more cores less battery drain?

Pondlife  Jan. 3, 2013 at 23:01

Don't think they 1800 one will be noticeably worse than the N4, One X, S3 or the like just that we'd rather go for an extra days use. And the extra depth is a bonus rather than a problem

AhmadCentral  Jan. 3, 2013 at 23:29

If anything the battery life of the 1800mah version should be better than phones likethe one x and nexus 4 due to the more effecient processor. They did a test of this processor against others and it was found to be the most effecient by a long shot.

Besides the phone comes with 2 batteries anyway. So it doesn't matter which one you get. You'd just get a longer battery life on the 3000mah version obviously.

Also the good thing about this company is that they seem to support their phones. Their one and a half year old Jiayu G2 has just got a jellybean update with the g3 due one soon.

Was thinking that was a bit slow, then remembered Sony P getting JB in March and S after that, not to mention support for the 2011 phones dropped..

AhmadCentral  Jan. 4, 2013 at 00:00

Most chinese manufactures don't even update the phones at all so its quite lucky really. But yeh, bit slow.

Pondlife  Jan. 4, 2013 at 00:49

Presume it's 4.1.x they are getting, regardless like I say it's better than Sony manage for even what was their flagship for much of the year...

mightyforest  Jan. 4, 2013 at 08:32

worthwhile just to chuck ubuntu on in 2014 as a play phone

Treab  Jan. 4, 2013 at 10:40

How well do these chinese phones work ahmad? i have only ever seen cheap knock offs which are useless lol

CTPAHHIK  Jan. 4, 2013 at 11:36

I would be more concerned with band availability. It looks like G3 only has 2100Mhz - this locks you to 3 and EE networks.

mightyforest  Jan. 4, 2013 at 11:52

three is good for me :)

That's correct. bear in mind that these phones are designed for the Chinese market so they're not going to cater for worldwide use. Also the phones will still work perfectly well on O2 and Vodafone as they use 2100Mhz as well. They only use a small amount of 900MHz for 3G, Nothing substntial. The thing about these phones is that they have two sim card slots. One supports 3G & 2G only. The other one just supports 2G only. This works great for me as i have my Three sim in the first slot and my O2 one in the second slot. So i don't even need to worry about O2 3G because it'll only pick up 2G anyway. + Three is my main data connection.

This will change soon though, Mediatek's newest processor allows for dual active sims and also two sim slots that both support 3G.
