Ex Nokia folk, Jolla, to build new MeeGo smartphones

Ex Nokia folk, Jolla, to build new MeeGo smartphonesAn interesting little company called Jolla has announced its presence via the cyberwebs. With staff including former Nokia directors, Jolla (Finnish for “dinghy”) looks to pick up where the Nokia N9 left off.

That’s right; all going well, Jolla will keep the dream alive, with new MeeGo-based hardware.

Jolla has caused a bit of a stir among MeeGo-loving nerds, with its twitter and LinkedIn pages.

On the latter, Jolla explains: “Nokia created something wonderful - the world's best smartphone product. It deserves to be continued, and we will do that together with all the bright and gifted people contributing to the MeeGo success story.

“Together with international private investors and partners, Jolla Ltd. will design, develop and sell new MeeGo based smartphones. The Jolla team consists of a substantial number of MeeGo's core engineers and directors, and is aggressively hiring the top MeeGo talent to contribute to the next generation smartphone production.”

Included in the Jolla line-up is one Marc Dillon, who worked with Nokia for 11 years before leaving in May this year. Among other positions, he was Principal Engineer for - you guessed it - MeeGo.

Are they working on an actual MeeGo device - or the Harmattan mash-up that graces the Nokia N9?

- at the moment near 50 employees. At end of this year 100 employees.
- offices in Helsinki and Tampere
- manufacturing: 3 big international partners and finnish subcontractors too.
- first products this year
- aims at the ‘big game’. It is difficult to be a small company in telecom industry.
- Jolla-phone: user uses the device and not vice versa. They’ll be making their own UI
- CEO Jussi Hurmola worked 12 years at Nokia. Last years with N9
- Hurmola’s interpretation: Nokia has taken Jolla-project nicely
- He thanks Nokia for being serious and sincere ( or frank) regarding the project.
