How do I 'kill' Android apps?

How do I close/kill Android apps? I have an HTC Desire S

HTC phones have a task manager built into sense.

In the app tray you navigate to 'Task Manager' and select kill all.

using different phone but think it's similar process
settings
apps
running
select the relevant app
stop

Can create a shortcut to the running apps page of settings if doing it often.

Much easier in ICS, but that's by the by. Can get app killers to make it simpler but generally considered better not to.
