What kind of things do custom ROMs do?

What kind of things do custom ROMs do that you can't do with an unrooted Android phone?

Generally speaking, a main advantage is the stuff they do NOT have: bloatware. The kind of unnecessary software added by networks that you usually cannot uninstall - whether you want it or not. As a result, they are often that little bit faster and go easier on the battery.

Also: the custom ROMs are usually rooted - so you can make use of loads of extra apps etc etc....

Then there are ROMs that come without the UI skin jobs that many manufacturers developed to make Android prettier. To stand out, or god-knows-why... Touchwiz, Sense, Timescape etc... although often featuring useful glitzy eyecandy, those skins are also very heavy on system resources. Example: disabling Sense on my HTC HD2 doubles the available RAM!!

You are also able to increase or decrease the clockspeed - simply put: squeeze the very last drop of power out of the processor for gaming etc... or go easy to maximise battery life.

Many ROMs let you install themes and tweaks specially designed for that particular ROM. Also, they feature all sorts of back-up and recovery modes for when things go wrong.
