KitKat Android 4.4 rolling out ‘now’ to Sony Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 Compact

KitKat Android 4.4 rolling out ‘now’ to Sony Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1 CompactFour months on from the software's initial release, the question “Where the hell’s my KitKat Android 4.4 update?” remains on many Android users’ lips.

Today we have the answer to that question if you happen to own a Sony Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 or Xperia Z1 Compact, and that answer is: right here, buddy.

That’s the word direct from Sony, though with the usual disclaimer that the “about now” promise is ultimately at the mercy of markets and networks.

In addition to general “performance & UI optimisation”, you can look forward to a tweaked Status Bar and Quick Settings, alongside a PlayStation 4-style UI (launch animation and livewallpaper, specifically) on the lock and home screens.

Sony’s Media apps (WALKMAN, Album and Movies) now offer “a more converged and full Sony entertainment experience”, while Xperia Themes invites you to customise various assests, including your navigation bar, icons and folders (more here).

As for the Sony Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia Tablet Z and Xperia ZR, they’ll start to see KitKat Android 4.4 “from mid-Q2”.

The Sony Xperia T2 Ultra, Xperia E1 and Xperia M2 are on the list, too, though there’s no mention of specific dates just yet.
