KooZac iOS review

KooZac iOS reviewAnd so to KooZac, the latest offering from Square Enix for iOS (iPhone, iPad and iPod touch).

There’s a good chance you’ll have played KooZac, or at least heard of it. See, it’s had no less than 15 million online plays (er, according to the press release thingy). No idea what I’m on about? Read on.

KooZac is a puzzler somewhat in the vein of Columns and Tetris, but instead of worrying about colours or shapes, here we’re primarily concerned with numbers.

Each block has a number on its cheeky face, and each time a new block falls from the top, the target is refreshed. Let’s say you’re dropping a 2 (not a euphemism) and the target is 8; you want to drop the 2 on a block or series of blocks totaling 6. Make sense?

And I’ve just summed up KooZac in its entirety. Not that that’s necessarily a bad thing; the best ideas are often the most simple, particularly when it comes to smartphones games.

To be fair, there are also a handful of power-ups in KooZac – purchasable (yeah, that’s a word) with the in-game currency. Among others, there’s the score multiplier, the time slowifier (okay, that’s not a word), and super hints.

There are also three game modes in KooZac, namely Puzzle (60 levels), Endless (self explanatory, no?), and Blitz (60-second mode with leaderboards).

However, I couldn’t help but feel that I’d seen everything after the first level; there’s not a heck of a lot going on. Again, that’s not necessarily the end of the world, but… hmm.

Also, I should mention that KooZac looks – frankly – appalling, right down to the Comic Sans-style font. Great graphics do not necessarily a great game make, admittedly, but… more hmm.

Worse still, I’m not entirely sure I enjoyed KooZac – and that is important. I felt like my brain was lifting weights. It is, however, oddly addictive, no doubt.

And that’s KooZac. Hey, it’s only 69p; what have you got to lose?

One and the same. Square Enix loved the game so much that they snapped up the license *and* the guy who created it.

Wonder if they can work on it a bit and give it a bit of a makeover, like you say it's no looker.
