Dissing the competition is unfortunately nothing new in the world of mobile phones, and I’ve made it perfectly clear that I think it’s a particularly low, lazy form of marketing bullsh*t.
In its latest campaign, LG – in association with M&C Saatchi, Stockholm – is going after Samsung Galaxy, iPhone and HTC One owners, each receiving a unique your-phone-is-cr*p advert.
Starting with Samsung Galaxy, the ad begins: “Waiting for your Galaxy to catch up?” before suggesting: “Get the LG G2 with 20% faster processor”. That sound you hear is a horde of Samsung Galaxy owners collectively dropping their phones in the bin. Or not.
As for the iPhone ad, it teases: “Hard to read this on your iPhone?” Get it? Because the iPhone display is REALLY SMALL, hahaha! Great stuff.
Finally, on HTC phones, the LG G2 ad reads: “Tired of charging your HTC One? Get the LG G2 with 30% longer battery life”.
Sigh. I don’t know about everyone else, but sh*t like this makes me seriously never want to buy an LG phone. But hey, maybe I’m the odd one out, and all the cool kids love hearing that their phone is rubbish.
If nothing else, for my money, it only serves to reiterate the fact that LG is playing catch-up (with Apple and Samsung, at least).
Having said all that, I’ll give the marketing guys the benefit of the doubt and assume that they know what they’re doing. Now let’s sit back and await the resultant LG G2 buying frenzy.
