We recently reviewed the LG P990, more popularly known as the Optimus 2X, and really kinda liked it. We praised its speedy processor and meaty 4in screen, and forgave the camera and touchscreen enough to award it 4/5.
However, testing a phone is one story; living with it is quite another. Dave didn’t have any problems with the LG Optimus 2X, but a worrying number of users have reported problems with random freezing and reboots.
A thread over on xda-developers - titled: "Phone shuts off!! Automatically!!" - now stretches over 100 pages, with 1,000+ posts relating to the LG Optimus 2X freezing, rebooting, and reaching high temperatures.
The LG Optimus 2X is said to freeze on occasion, displaying a black screen and failing to respond to any key presses. The only option for users is to remove the battery. It’s also said to reboot randomly, and produce a significant amount of heat while on charge.
Early adopters of the LG Optimus 2X have banded together and demanded answers from LG. As well as a petition, there’s a dedicated Facebook page called “LG Optimus 2X Random Reboots”.
Trusted Reviews contacted LG and received a reply, confirming that “a few Optimus 2x customers are occasionally experiencing random device shut-offs. While this does not affect every customer, LG regrets the inconvenience this has caused.”
Apparently LG has identified the source of the problem, and a software update – which takes around 20-30 minutes to install – is now available from LG’s website.
