LG's Optimus 3D mk II: for real 3D lovers only?

LG's Optimus 3D mk II: for real 3D lovers only? Our old buddies Lucky Goldstar are at it again, following up on the X3 leaks with the one we all suspected was coming anyway: the LG Optimus 3D 2.

It's codenamed the CX2, but the on-board 3D gives the game away pretty conclusively. But for those hoping for a real game-changer to give 3D the kick up the backside it really needs, we suspect you might be disappointed.

Like the 3X, the leak of LG's 3D reboot comes to us via PocketNow, and again we're being told it'll be shown off in Barcelona next month at Mobile World Congress – which is perfectly logical, of course.

But what we will be curious to see is whether LG will make as big a deal about 3D as it did a year ago. We suspect not – or to put it another way: know anyone who actually has an Optimus 3D? Nope, us neither.

And that's before you even see the spec the CX2 is rumoured to have on board. It has a 4.3in screen with a 800 x 480 resolution, a TI 1.2GHz processor, a pair of 5-megapixel cameras (as before), and Android Gingerbread. Yes, we're serious.

In its defence, LG will no doubt point to the 3D tech on board as the reason why some of the other specs are limited. And the rest of us will point to that fact as precisely why we never bought the Optimus 3D, and probably won't be buying this one either.

Another failure in the making, LG should save some cash and not even bother launching it. At least the X3 looked a relatively interesting prospect.

blah d blah blah...

The LG Optimus 3D is an AWESOME phone! It is a superb piece of engineering only let down by LG's slow rate of software updates. I consistently get quadrant scores over 3500 on GB without overclocking.

With regards to the CX2, I agree with Matt in that they shouldn't bother with a half hearted update. When they announced the Optimus 3D last February they took the best they had (Optimus 2X) and made it better whilst also adding 3D. Hence, unless they are going to take the X3 specs and add 3D with ICS at launch, they should put the money towards improving their software department.

Tbf is have said 3d in mobiles is the only device where it actually makes sense (outside the cinema), tv's are too small for the full enjoyment of the experience and being able to record/create and share 3d media through the phone would be great, the original lg 3d is one of the few android phones id consider getting!

This does seem a shame that it's such a lame update, tho, really all they need to do slim down the housing and add android 4.0 and release it at a reasonable price
