Can light rain damage a smartphone?

Can using your smartphone in very light rain potentially damage it? Or would you really have to submerge the smartphone in water?

Depends on the Phone, but light rain should not damage the phone. Submerging would damage it but it can be fixed by drying quickly. Although i've heard of friends phones surviving a washing machine? Some phones are marketed as waterproof (motorola defy) and so are much more adapt at surviving when submerged under water.

However, light rain can make the indicator inside the phone turn red. This indicates to a repair centre that the phone has been water damaged (even though it hasn't) and a repair centre will refuse to fix a phone under a standard warranty.
