Lumia 710 vs. Galaxy W

My dad rang me earlier and said his work have offered him either a Nokia Lumia 710 or a Samsung Galaxy W as a free upgrade on his business contract. I didn't know which one to advise him to get. Just as a little background information, he's relatively techy (to the point where he could easily master an Android phone) but I don't want to be a free tech. support hotline for the next 18 months for any times he does get stuck with it...

Anyone got any useful suggestions on which one I should advise him to get?

Thanks

Tricky as definitely more similarities hardware wise than differences.
Being gingerbread already should be less tech support than if you had to put roms on.
Prefer Ovi maps navigation to google though.
What phone has he got atm.
My parents will only use nokia as can't be bothered to learn anything else, wasn't allowed to get touchscreen one for them either lol

Yes, agree.

If he's relatively 'techie', the Lumia will depress him within hours. If, however, he doesn't want to waste time on fancy features and tweaking for tweaks-sake, than the more straightforward Lumia may be an option.
Rather than his level of techie-ness, you might wanna tell us what he most has to/likes to use his phone for.

i think that lumia 710 is a better choice

Currently he has a Nokia 6500, I think. Or it may be a 6300...I'm not entirely sure, it's one of the two anyway.

What my dad uses his phone for (AFAIK):

1) He wants to use it for email, he told me that
2) Lots of phone calls (every time I see him he's on the bloody phone)
3) A few texts to friends and family
4) The odd picture when they go on holiday etc.
5) He wants to be able to use the internet in front of the TV without having to fetch his laptop
6) Very casual gaming (5 mins on the train, for example).

I think that's about it, sorry I can't be more specific guys. It was a pretty brief chat I had with him.

Any reasoning? I was looking for justified answers preferably...

style of the os.

simplicity. everything has its own app pic. and they dont use that tile system which is a little complicated

honestly for your first touch screen the galaxy w is a little better.

Get him the Lumia. You know I hate WP, but I think the Lumia will be less stress for him....and for you. You know the kind of questions we face here every day...what's that eating my data; what's that notification etc etc... They are always about Android. Then iOS...

Also: the fact that it's a Nokia might take some of the edge off of having a new OS to deal with.
Since it's only between those 2 devices, I'd say Lumia. Otherwise he should grab a budget N8 or X7 with Belle. Close enough to his 6500, but most modern cons and better battery life for all those talks.

now now jan. we dont get questions about w7 cause no-one buys them...

matt101101 / MOD  Mar. 18, 2012 at 18:29

Treab, fair point, only about 1-2% of all the questions we receive "should" be about WP as that's it's approx. market share.

Jan, yes, the Lumia 710 and the Galaxy W are the only two choices, apparently, so the other phones you suggested aren't really an option. I know WP7 is easier to use than Android but once you've got used to Android it is a better OS....it doesn't help that hardware wise they're almost identical, they just run different OS'.

A few million isn't "no-one" - we get Qs about rare ole phones.... I'm talking about the kind of questions we get with regards to entry level Android phones. That was in allusion to Matt's comment that he doesn't wanna end-up his dad's personal jesus of the phone sect...

Nevermind.

I suppose, to hark back on that, an Android device does make sense seeing how matt knows more (?) about Android phones than there is to know about WP. Also: screw you, M$ :p

D'ya see what I mean when I said I was confused now :p? I have no idea which one he should get. I know if I say go to a shop, he'll pick WP because it's so simple but I know that in the long run Android is the more complete and feature filled OS and the Galaxy W has plenty of power to use all those features (bearing in mind it's got way more power than my last Android phone, the HTC Desire).

Treab  Mar. 18, 2012 at 20:34

or mine the htc hero ;)

i say android. more available to him more apps. and you can show him the joys of 'rip her clothes'

matt101101 / MOD  Mar. 18, 2012 at 20:47

Well it has 2.33 times the CPU clockspeed of your old Hero, not to mention the newer Adreno 205 GPU or the fact it's a newer processor architecture :p.

Or the fact it has twice the RAM....nearly forgot that one ;).

Treab  Mar. 18, 2012 at 20:51

:D my old 528mhz processor rocked ;) 256mb ram ha who needs 1gb...

did it even have a gpu?? still a really nice phone to use... only crashed 3 times in 2 years?

Pondlife  Mar. 18, 2012 at 21:00

Might be more feature filled but either would do all what you listed above really easily. And for those you shouldn't need much tech support either. :)

Pondlife  Mar. 26, 2012 at 23:38

what did you tell him to go for in the end?

matt101101 / MOD  Mar. 26, 2012 at 23:40

Told him to go to a phone shop and play with both, I'm not sure what he bought, I haven't spoken to him since then :p.

EDIT: He won't have bought either...it's a work contract. My bad.

JanSt / MOD  Mar. 26, 2012 at 23:42

You could have offered him my fr*ggin' N9... 10% mobotnik discount (+10% dual-boot extra)

matt101101 / MOD  Mar. 26, 2012 at 23:44

I think he wants a phone with one fully working OS...not two quite broken ones :p.

Without question the Lumia. Simple, functional and quick.
