why do these lumia cost so much, A T &T in usa selling the 920 for $100 on a 2 year contract, we are shafted again

I don't think we are; we normally get a much better deal when it comes to mobiles.

In the US, the Lumia 920 is $140 upfront (inc sales tax), $86 per month for the base tariff, with a $36 activation fee on a two-year deal.

The same deal in the UK is phone for £30 ($48), £41 per month ($66) for a two-year deal.

Identical tariffs with 1gb data and unlimited texts and calls.

The gap between UK and US pricing only gets wider the more data you buy.
