Why don't manufacturers put the model name on the phone?

I've noticed it's quite rare for manufacturers to put the name of a phone on the case? Why is that?

It'd look tacky and would be totally pointless? It's like debadging your car, why does the rest of the world need to know what model/spec/engine it is/has.

Just thank god most networks don't brand their phones anymore with their hideous logo on the front/back of the phone like they do in the USA. I'm looking at you Orange!

Agree with matty...
I used to hate Sony Ericsson for that Xperia logo on their Xperias...
Also, a few phones are selling under different "names" (vs model number) in different markets.

My (somewhat broken) phone has it's name on the front... (it was a downside) Mind you that goes back to AhmadCentral's point. Thanks Orange.

I think putting it in small writing on the back would be handy for phone shop staff, have just this week seen two phones with wrong labelling in front of them. Mind you just the dummy ones would suffice for that.
