Personally, I got my hands on a Sony Xperia Z1 - not a gift, more of a loaner that I shall play with over my (short) holidays...
So far, it's made me homicidal once - when trying to insert the SIM-card (granted, who does that, eh?). Then I thought it was broken when taking the first photo in low light - you see, the Z1 shows you the crappy low-light pixel mess while you're targeting your object. Only when you hit the shutter does it apply its software imaging magic, and boy (and girl) it does a good job. It squeezes light out of near perfect dark. And although on a big screen the resulting photo
cannot compete with those taken by the Lumia 1020, the Z1 is faster, its camera UI is more pleasant, and you do not need the blinding focus light..
Not so impressed by its antenna performance. When downloading apps in the background other data services such as an updating Twitter stream frequently stall.
But I shall spend some more time with it before I fully judge it.
It's definitely more pleasant to look at than Touchwiz :p
And it has something that no other Android OEM offers: Sony Link for MAC - an Android sync program for Mac OS that actually works. Works rather well, actually! Take that HTC, BB, Samsung etc etc.... Thumbs up, Sony

I'm afraid no phones this year but I did get a little geeky present... The missus got me a PCI Express Half Mini WiFi AC card for the laptop.
No more running 2.4ghz for me with the baby monitor causing me to disconnect every 3 minutes :)

nook hd+ though it's resisting my urge to root and mod it so far. I kinda like the interface as it is.
And a Nexus 4 on the way maybe from Scan. Not convinced they'll have enough tbh.

Oh and tomorrow probably a 4G mobile broadband router having seen that EE reckon they have 4G here I'd like to test it out.

Got the missus a Moto G. Honestly, it's like my gnex went through mitosis...

Ditto, a great phone for the price.

bricked N9 :( , bought jolla :)

JanSt / MOD  Dec. 29, 2013 at 12:46

Semi-bricked ;) It works. But oddly, the last update made it very very laggy, and even full reset and re-flashing of the firmware haven't cured it. It's usable, but too annoying when you know how fast and smooth it used to run.

mines fully bricked, wont flash

Ouch.... I'll try and flash Sailfish, but the procedure is not exactly straightforward.
Will need to do it when I have a lot of spare time on my hand. i.e. never...

I'm still getting my head around Sony writing software that works...

But my N4 did arrive and is busily updating

Well, been playing some more with the Xperia z1... I'm trying to ignore that I don't like Android... It's a good-looking device. It feels extremely uncomfortable. Like a huge iPhone 4.
Cold, angular, slippery - like a Lego eel.
The camera is overall rather disappointing. It has some neat tricks - such as getting visible, usable pics where the iPhone 5c, Lumia 925 and Galaxy Camera only show black with some lighter blotches. So, thumbs up for that. Outdoors it stinks - compared to the 925, 1020 and even the 5c. Bland colours, never quite focused where it should be... MIND YOU: I could be biased... Android as an OS annoys me more and more. It wants to be so very much, and no single feature seems 'finished'... But hey...
If you have HUGE steady hands it's nice; and it looks impressive on a coffee table.

Pondlife  Dec. 30, 2013 at 20:48

Sounds really odd that it can do the hard work but not try better with the easier one.

Not as impressive on the coffee table as the camera shortchanged Z ultra though

JanSt / MOD  Dec. 30, 2013 at 21:16

True :p
Yeah, I'm quite disappointed by the camera. It could really use OIS.
When you do manage to hold the Z1 perfectly still, the outdoor photos are quite impressive.
But for a flagship device that brags about its photography capabilities it's not much...
Video is even worse imho.
Overall, without the Sony logo you'd think it's one of Huawei attempts to break into Europe...
Like an Ascend P6 Plus Extreme...
