What does MHz and GHz mean?

I'm looking at new phones and keeps seeing MHz and GHz. What do they mean exactly, and what's a good amount? How much do I need for texting, Facebook and games?

MHz and GHz refer to the unit measuring a CPU's speed. A hertz is a cpu cycle per second. That means the higher hertz figure the more processes the cpu can do in a second.
A mHz is a million cycles per seconds; a gHz is 1000 mHz.
A phone with a 1 gHz processor will get most jobs done.
