Is micro-SD class important when used with a smartphone? Does class make a difference to reading apps and music from the card?

Absolutely - the higher the read-write speed the faster apps can deal with files. You'll notice it when you have a lot of photos or tracks on your card.

Whereas I've read that class 6 is better than 10.

If you mean playback by music you definitely won't notice it.

True... for playback of music or videos it won't make much of a difference. But if you open a photo album and it takes a minute until all thumbnails are generated, a faster card might help.
Though, I find on Android even internal memory struggles in such situations (compared to WP and iOS)
