We'd advise keeping the salt cellar within easy reach on this one: Microsoft is rumoured to be working on a Surface smartphone to go with the tablet it announced back in June.
A mystery device has just popped up on WP Bench's logs bearing the name “Microsoft Surface Phone”, and though we don't have any other details to go on, the name doesn't leave a whole lot of room for interpretation.
There have been whispers since Windows Phone 7 first launched that Microsoft might consider launching a WP handset of its own to show off the OS in its best light, but thus far nothing concrete has developed.
And to tell the truth, it's hard to see how this scrap of info changes that. At best we'd suggest the mystery device is an early prototype or test device we won't be seeing anytime soon; at worst it's a mistake or a deliberate hoax.
Microsoft, let's not forget, was responsible for the embarrassingly unsuccessful KIN phones, a failure that suggests Microsoft should leave the development of smartphone hardware to its betters.
Then again, no-one saw the Surface tablet coming either, and with Windows Phone 8 ready to provide the substance the KIN phones never offered, you never know.
