Now Microsoft wants to make a Surface smartphone too?

Now Microsoft wants to make a Surface smartphone too? We'd advise keeping the salt cellar within easy reach on this one: Microsoft is rumoured to be working on a Surface smartphone to go with the tablet it announced back in June.

A mystery device has just popped up on WP Bench's logs bearing the name “Microsoft Surface Phone”, and though we don't have any other details to go on, the name doesn't leave a whole lot of room for interpretation.

There have been whispers since Windows Phone 7 first launched that Microsoft might consider launching a WP handset of its own to show off the OS in its best light, but thus far nothing concrete has developed.

And to tell the truth, it's hard to see how this scrap of info changes that. At best we'd suggest the mystery device is an early prototype or test device we won't be seeing anytime soon; at worst it's a mistake or a deliberate hoax.

Microsoft, let's not forget, was responsible for the embarrassingly unsuccessful KIN phones, a failure that suggests Microsoft should leave the development of smartphone hardware to its betters.

Then again, no-one saw the Surface tablet coming either, and with Windows Phone 8 ready to provide the substance the KIN phones never offered, you never know.

indeed... "you never know".

I don't imagine we'll see a Microsoft branded and manufactured "surface phone" until MS are ready to ditch "Windows Phone X" altogether as an OS, and just run full fat Windows (or RT which will probably happen first) on it.

Agree. Also: those benchmarks could mean a lot... It's not like MS don't have phones to try WP8 on, right?

Just an idea but could this not be one of the Google Nexus made by Samsung scenarios but Microsoft Surface by Nokia?

Releasing a Surface phone would be a bit of a U-Turn. Supposedly they built the Surface tablet to set the minimum standard for OEMs and ensure that they produced good hardware. Since WP7.5, Windows Phone hardware has been pretty good (Radar, Titan, Titan II, Lumia series). There doesn't seem to be any reason to follow suit on the phone.

I hope this is true! I'd love to see what Microsoft can cook up, especially after seeing the fantastic job they did with the Surface Tablets. It could put the necessary heat on Samsung & others to give Windows Phone the attention (and hardware) it deserves, or to get out of the way.

Agree. Windows phone hardware has been above average. In fact better than most Android 'flagships' imho...

Possible, but not really necessary.

The whole reason of Surface was to show OEM's there's a better way. Unfortunately and predictably all OEM's did was say, "Hmm... So Windows 8 works well with touch, but you can also use it like a normal OS. I know! Let's rehash the same unpopular convertibles that we made twenty thousand years ago!"

I'd say that the Windows Phone platform will be looking healthy come Christmas, so a kick in the right direction isn't really necessary.
