Microsoft has dropped a major hint that the next version of Windows Phone will be released towards the end of the year.
A job posting on the Microsoft Careers website says Microsoft is “targeting the holidays” for its next big WP update, which we expect to be part of the global software update codenamed Blue.
The post being advertised is headlined as “Software Development Engineer in Test – Windows Phone Job”, which in itself gives little away.
Further down, though, Microsoft gives a clear indication of its Windows Phone roadmap in its attempts to sell the benefits of the position.
“This is a great time to join as we’re completing our current release are getting ready for our next release targeting the holiday of this year and we’re chartered with keeping the momentum for Windows Phone by bringing new killer devices and delightful user experiences,” the posting reads.
This builds on earlier indications – also from a couple of job postings – that Windows Blue will be a Microsoft-wide series of software updates, including major refreshes of both Windows and Windows Phone.
However, the suggestion at that point was that Microsoft was targeting a late summer release for the OS updates, rather than the holiday season indicated by the latest posting.
We've also caught wind recently of Windows Phone 8 GDR2, a service pack update to Microsoft's mobile OS that the rumoured HTC Tiara will apparently have on board when it emerges later this year.
The best way of bringing it all together, then, is that GDR2 will be arriving in the summer (as will the HTC Tiara), and Windows Phone Blue at the end of the year. All clear? Thought not.
