Does MMS use data?

If I send a large pic in an MMS does that use data?

No. MMS uses a different APN so although you need 3g for it to work it doesn't get charged against your data allowance/bill. You will find that most networks however charge a nice hefty sum for each MMS you send and it DOESN'T come from your SMS allowance (if you have one).
i.e. use sparingly and try email or bluetooth instead :)
