Ever seen that episode of Only Fools and Horses where Del Boy is going round trying to flog a mobile phone? Huge and ugly but touted as the way of the future, he has little joy.
We can't help wondering what late Only Fools writer John Sullivan would make of the news that by the end of this year, there will be more mobile devices on this planet than people!
To clarify, we're not just talking phones here - the term 'mobile devices' covers everything from tablets to smartphones to old-style bricks, but the claim comes from Cisco Systems, who do know a thing or two about the comms industry.
Cisco has looked at expenansion not just for 2012 but over the next four years, in fact, and presumes that by then, there'll be 10bn active devices, which essentially calculates as 1.4 devices per person. Not that everyone in the world will necessarily have one, of course.
In the meantime, keep an eye on China and Brazil. Record numbers of devices are being activated there every day. We'd wager a huge chunk of those 10 billion-odd devices will be gobbled up by their rapidly expanding markets between now and 2016.
