There are a very small number of Motorola devices on Ice Cream Sandwich at the moment, with the US Wi-Fi only Xoom being the sole beast to receive an official upgrade to Android 4.0.
To be fair, Motorola has been quite open about the procedure and the timings and that, but now it says if your device isn’t improved by Ice Cream Sandwich, you ain’t getting it.
That’s the word from The Official Motorola Blog. Amusingly, the post finishes: “Happy upgrading!” Er, who is that aimed at, exactly?
The meat of the post reads: “You may be wondering why all devices aren’t being upgraded to Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). Here’s the deal. We work very closely with Google and cell phone carriers for every software update. And, obviously we want the new release to improve our devices. If we determine that can’t be done—well then, we’re not able to upgrade that particular device.”
Looking at Motorola’s Android Software Upgrade News page, it appears that the European Motorola Pro+ will now remain on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread). It was previously listed at the Ice Cream Sandwich planning and evaluation stage.
Otherwise, timings appear to be as previously reported. That means we can still expect Ice Cream Sandwich for the Motorola Razr and Wi-Fi Motorola Xoom in Q2, followed by the Xoom 2 in Q3. The Motorola Atrix and 3G Motorola Xoom, meanwhile, remain at the planning stage. Fingers crossed...
