The Motorola Moto 360 is easily one of the most talked about smartwatches to date, largely thanks to its – shock horror – round display.
While we await further information on the release date, price and specs, Motorola is teasing us in video format with Moto 360: Why a Watch.
The cynics out there might answer that question with: “Because everyone else is releasing a smartwatch and the iWatch is almost certainly arriving this quarter.”
But the question seems to pertain more so to the Moto 360’s design rather than its very existence. Again, with its round display, the Moto 360 looks very much like… a watch.
Indeed, Product Lead Lior Ron confirms that the Moto 360 was “inspired by watches”, and suggests that up until a decade ago, watches were “the most personal used piece of technology.”
Of course, for many the smartphone has become the go-to piece of technology for telling time, but since it’s clearly too much effort to reach into your pocket, analysts reckon the slight convenience of wearing a smartwatch is The Next Big Thing.
Three reasons for making the Moto 360 round, according to Ron: 1. It’s “super comfortable”, 2. It invites a “sizeable display”, 3. It’s “classical”.
The square-faced LG G Watch would inevitably dispute all that, but we’ll see what happens if/when the Smartwatch Wars heat up nearer Christmas.
