Get ready for a serious September, smartphone fans. The Apple iPhone 5 is sure to take top billing (even though, of course, nothing has actually been confirmed yet), and we're also expecting Nokia's first Windows Phone 8 devices to emerge.
Now Motorola is getting into the game too, scheduling a product launch event of its own on September 5 – the same day as Nokia's – and promising it'll be the day's main event. Fiiiight!
Technically, Nokia's is two events – one being Nokia World in Finland, and the second a launch event in the US, clearly for the same purpose: to unleash the company's next generation Lumia device(s), which are set to run Windows Phone 8 Apollo.
But Motorola for one clearly isn't overawed, and has promised “the day's main event” will in fact be its own launch for an as-yet unconfirmed new device, though it's pretty likely we're talking about the Droid RAZR HD Lewis covered earlier in the week.
More than that we don't know, and while Moto's may well be the main event for US punters, we'd back Nokia's new arrivals to be the first to land on UK shores based on past evidence.
The September 5 date is significant as it's widely expected to be a week before Apple lifts the lid on the iPhone 5, giving two companies who could certainly do with a bit of help right now a chance to steal the spotlight. Again, though, based on previous experience the iPhone 5 will probably be first on the shelves in the UK regardless of when they're all launched.
Just out of morbid curiosity, wouldn't it be interesting if the September 12 launch rumour for the iPhone 5 was yet another case of Apple misinformation, and last-minute invites were sent out revealing that Cupertino's shindig was in fact set for September 4? Doesn't bear thinking about...
