Motorola unveils Atrix 2

Motorola unveils Atrix 2Motorola has officially lifted the lid on its successor to the former “most powerful smartphone in the world”. Yep, it’s the Motorola Atrix 2.

Today was the day we were supposed to meet Ice Cream Sandwich and the Samsung-developed Google Nexus Prime, but the Motorola Atrix 2 is a pretty decent consolation prize.

Amusingly, the press release suggests that the Motorola Atrix 2 combines “extreme power” with “life of the party.” The former we get, given the dual-core processor, but we’re not entirely sure what Motorola means by the latter.

Specs? The Motorola Atrix 2 has a 4.3in qHD display with an impressive 960x540 resolution. Hey, that’s the same resolution and screen size as the HTC Sensation XE.

In terms of memory, we’ve got 8GB ROM, 1GB RAM, and a 2GB microSD card (expandable to 32GB, natch).

Over in camera town, we’ve got an 8MP rear snapper, a front-facing camera, and 1080p video capture with 30fps playback. Gingerbread (Android 2.3) will perform the OS honours.

No word on a UK release just yet. Let’s hope Moto forsakes the traditional transatlantic delay in favour of some rapid Atrix 2 lovin’.

i wonder why they have dropped the memory from the original atrix

still it does look pretty sweet

Hmm that does seem an odd thing to do, more regression than progression...I'd assume they simply did it because it's cheaper for them to produce, marginally.

ok been looking into this phone...

whats actually changed???

Atrix vs Atrix 2

1ghz dual core vs 1ghz dual core
1gb ram vs 1gb ram
16gb memory vs 8gb memory
4.0" screen vs 4.3" screen
5mp camera vs 8mp camera

... i dont know about gpu as yet but this looks like more copying of apple...

you know a half arsed upgrade...

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 11, 2011 at 13:48

What processor has it got?

All I can seem to find is "1ghz dual core", which doesn't actually tell us anything useful...such as whether it's a crappy old Tegra 2 with it's underpowered GPU...

Treab  Oct. 11, 2011 at 13:53

Just a 1ghz dual core on the info so far. but why? why not have a 1.2 or 1.5 or even higher... this is motos flagship it would have all the bells and whistles... unless the razr is the flagship of course ;)

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 11, 2011 at 13:59

Clock speed isn't everything...the Exynos @ 1.2ghz is far faster than the Snapdragon @ 1.5ghz, afterall. Maybe it's a massively efficient 1ghz, though I doubt it, it'll probably either be a Tegra 2 or a TI OMAP (which isn't a bad SoC).

Hopefully they don't drag the razr out for about 5 years this time :p.

Treab  Oct. 11, 2011 at 14:07

i think if they keep the RAZR name for the top phones i think it could be a good brand... atrix becomes the workhouse for example.

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 11, 2011 at 18:09

It's a TI OMAP processor, which is far better, from what I understand, than the Tegra 2.

Treab  Oct. 11, 2011 at 18:15

Seems the bigger brother of that processor is going into the nexus prime...

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 11, 2011 at 18:24

Is it the bigger brother or just an un-underclocked version, a la Sensation & Sensation XE?

Treab  Oct. 11, 2011 at 18:34

bigger bro.

the one in the new atrix is a 1.0 to 1.2 ghz variable.

the 1.5ghz one going into the prime is a different processor...

least i think it is.. oO

Cheers for that, I know nothing about TI OMAP processors, since we barely see them over here in the UK, they're pretty much only used in the Moto Droid range in the US. What I have heard and read is good though, somewhere above the Tegra and Snapdragon and below the Exynos.

The PowerVR SGX540 GPU looks a bit disapponting though :( that means the Galaxy Nexus will have less GPU power than the iPhone 4S :(

Treab  Oct. 11, 2011 at 20:04

Maybe if its true (no guarantees that it will be) however i wonder about that gpu in the apple ifony 4s... apples key argument is its about 7 times more powerful than the one in the sgs2 but owing to the way apples ifony 4s's processor is weaker will that extra power go to waste bottled behind a weak processor? the same way a powerful processor can be bottled behind a weak gpu.

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 11, 2011 at 22:37

No, Apple said 7x more powerful than the iPhone 4, which is far inferior in terms of it's GPU compared to the SGS2. It's less than 2x as powerful as the SGS2, which is still massively powerful. I've heard the iPhone 4S' processor may be underclocked to 800mhz as it doesn't benchmark as high as the iPad 2, by a bigger difference than some RAM could possibly make, which is interesting.

So, maybe you're right. If you stuck an nVidia GT590 in a computer with a core duo processor, you'd get pretty crappy GPU and CPU performance...Obviously that's a far more extreme example, but you see my point. Maybe the Exynos makes better use of the slightly inferior Mali 400 than the crappy A5 can make of the SGX543...

Treab  Oct. 11, 2011 at 22:55

did you hear about the dual antennas inside the iphone 4s is infringing on a patent owned by samsung? something they said was 'unique' but was actually designed by a professor who sold the patent onto samsung..

matt101101 / MOD  Oct. 11, 2011 at 23:22

Apple taking someone else's ideas, making them look shiny, then selling them on as new and innovative....never...Oh no, they do it several times a year, every year, my bad.
