The annual GSMA Global Mobile Awards are a bit like The Oscars for mobile phones. Or maybe that should be The Brits, with this year’s GSMA thingy being hosted by James Corden. Weird.
Anyway! The results are in, and it’s yet another victory for the HTC One, picking up Best Smartphone over the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S4.
Announced just over a year ago, the aluminium-bodied HTC One garnered seemingly endless critical acclaim, largely being described as the sexiest smartphone of all the times.
Already sitting in the trophy cabinet are, among others, Best New Device (Mobile World Congress 2013), and European Advanced Smartphone of the Year 2013-2014 (EISA).
Sadly, the abundant critical acclaim hasn’t directly translated to sales, and the latest award will ultimately do nothing to stop HTC’s downward spiral. But hey! At least the GSMA likes the HTC One. Ahem.
Other notable GSMA 2014 Global Mobile Awards winners include:
- Best Entertainment App (Gaming, Music, Sports, Video) - Device 6
- Best Low-Cost Smartphone (sub-$150 wholesale price) - Nokia Lumia 520
- Best Entry-level or Featurephone - Nokia 105
- Best Mobile Tablet - Apple iPad Air
- Most Innovative Device Manufacturer of the Year - LG
The winner of 'Best New Mobile Handset, Device or Tablet at Mobile World Congress 2014' will be announced tomorrow morning. I'll eat my pants if it's not the Samsung Galaxy S5, though it's not too far-fetched to imagine the Sony Xperia Z2 getting the nod.
