Our second hit of rugged phone action today features the Kyocera Torque, which goes head to head with the Caterpillar B15 offering an even tougher set of hardman capabilities.
Plus it also has a celebrity endorsement from tough-as-nails action man adventurer Bear Grylls, who seems quite taken by the “rugged 4G Android for your extreme or everyday”.
The 4G bit is aimed at the US, where the Torque is already being lined up on Sprint's network, and given the underdeveloped state of 4G here in the UK, you're best just ignoring that part.
Even without that, though, the Kyocera Torque does seem to have the edge on the B15. It also offers IP67 water- and dust-proofing, plus it has Mil 810G rating for dust, shock, vibration, temperature and various other environmental nastiness.
The impact-resistant display measures 4in across and offers 480 x 800 resolution, you get a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor calling the shots along with 1GB of RAM and 4GB of internal storage. So slightly better than the Cat B15, but not much.
Ultimately, though, it'll probably be the Bear Grylls factor that will make the Torque stand out from its rivals for most people and make it the first-choice mobile for nights out roughing it, whether it's in the bush or just a nearby hotel.
