N9: Nokia's big MeeGo hope arriving within weeks?

N9: Nokia's big MeeGo hope arriving within weeks?Fancy bagging a new Nokia N9? Looks like it might just be available imminently.

The good news is the date we're hearing of is less than a month away. The bad news - you may have to take a trip to Eastern Europe or beyond to pick one up.

According to Mynokiablog, there's been official word from Nokia Russia that the Finns' latest protege will be available on August 19.

It's been put up on the website of a Khazakstan retailer though we're unsure if that's the date it will actually be yours to buy or just available to pre-order from.

Either way, they're promising a discounted price of 99,990 Khazak Tengue (£420 to you and me) for those who purchase from them.

It's at least a sign that the N9 release is getting nearer. Nokia has been fairly tight-lipped about an official launch date for its first (and seemingly only) MeeGo handset, only saying that it is scheduled for release later this year.

Fans of the Finnish giant (which has now been overtaken by Apple as the largest mobile manufacturer in the world) will be grappling to get their hands on what is likely to be a niche handset.

But analysts are questioning Nokia's timing, because the longer Nokia waits the closer the N9's appearance will be scheduled to the arrival of the first Nokia Windows Phone handset.

And then a whole new chapter begins...

The N9 is a lovely device but not sure if it has any future?Just too little too late from Nokia.

I see your point, Julias.
But we shouldn't judge the N9 based on Elop's management style. It's a phone.
Of course, it'll never see 300.000 MeeGo apps. But there's the dangling carrot of an Android vm and even without that materialising the Nokia N9 will probably cover a lot of apps-ground out-of-the-box - from social notworking like twitter and facebook to angry birds, wifi tethering, maps etc etc...and there will be 3rd party apps and firmware updates. Nokia dropped the N900's Maemo ages ago, but through community efforts there are still regular apps and updates coming.
So, imho, if the hardware delivers, it will be a good device as long as you're not an appstore junkie.

And yes, a lot will depend on the price. If Elop wants to kill it, they'll overprice it out of the market.
I reckon it will sell good enough numbers. Every N900 owner will buy one, and a lot of curious iOSAndroid-bored folks might give it a try. And let's not forget: combined, the Nokia C7 and N8 sold pretty well....a lot of those buyers will be wanting to experience an E7 sized screen without the bulk and with a better cam...

I heard somewhere that it will be compatible with Adroid Apps out of the box is that true or just hogwash?

Hard to say at this point. It's claimed the N9 will support Android apps, but if that'll be the case from launch or after a future update - who knows? The webOS tab by HP was supposed to have the Android emulator upon launch, also RIM's Playbook... neither are quite there, yet.
one thing that is more likely: modders bringing webOS apps to Meego.
But we'll see.

If it supports android then this might be worthy contender, but as you say we will have to wait and see?
