What are the names for the different versions of Android?

I see people talking about gingerbread and things, but which versions apply to which names?

Until now the major commercial releases have been named after desserts. They've been progressing alphabetically too. Supposedly 2.4 will be staying as Gingerbread the same as 2.3.

1.5 = Cupcake
1.6 = Donut
2.0 & 2.1 = Eclair
2.2 = Froyo
2.3 (& maybe 2.4) = Gingerbread
3.0 (tablets, supposedly no phones) = Honeycomb

Next rumoured name is "Ice Cream/Ice Cream Sandwich" which has been suggested both for 2.5 and 4.x depending on which rumours you read.

2.2 was codenamed ‘Froyo’
‘Gingerbread’ is version 2.3
3.0, recently debuted by Google has been called ‘Honeycomb’

man... all this food talk is making me hungry! I think I'll try that chocolate trifle I saw at the supermarket the other day.

The next one after that is Jellybean, simply because there are no other deserts that start with "J" that aren't brand names.

emmajk42 / MOD  Oct. 25, 2011 at 17:18

Jelly, Jam, can't think of more.

markthema3  Oct. 25, 2011 at 17:27

True, but in the US where Google is, those aren't considered desserts.

Jelly (since Google's American), Doughnut (I refuse to spell it the wrong...sorry...American way).

Another non-branded "J", dessert.

But 1.6 was Donut. They won't use names that are so close together.

They should reincarnate the name, spelling it correctly this time ;).

Jelly Bean!

what is the name of the android version 2.3.6

matt101101 / MOD  Jan. 16, 2012 at 21:58

2.3.6 is just a variant (a late version to be specific) of Gingerbread. All 2.3.X versions are sub-categories of Gingerbread.
