Why didn't they just make nano-SIMs in the first place?

If a mini-SIM can be cut down to nano-SIM, why didn't they just make them that size to start with? Why all the wasted space?

Why not Gorilla Glass in 1998? Or micro-SD cards?

...okay, more seriously: old phones were big. Really big. A few cubic millimetres were not a biggie. But once things like that are established, it takes clout to change them. I'm sure others thought about smaller SIMs before (in fact: no sims, indeed). The networks need to play ball. Etc etc... Sony( Ericsson) tried it with memory cards. And before micro-usb connectors, quite a few (incl. Nokia, htc etc) tried to make mini-usb a phone standard.
