Netflix comes to Windows Phone in the UK and Ireland

Netflix comes to Windows Phone in the UK and IrelandNetflix has unleashed version 2.0 of its Windows Phone app, with a handful of additions and generally improved experience.

More importantly, Netflix is now available for Windows Phone users in the UK and Ireland. All two of you! I jest. And cue: backlash.

The Netflix app has been available for a while across the Atlantic, specifically the US and Canada, and the latest update extends its reach considerably. As well as the UK and Ireland, a number of countries in Latin America finally get a taste.

We recently heard that the Nokia Lumia 900 was doing quite well Stateside, perhaps due to its assocation with busty orange-faced maniac Nicki Minaj, but more likely thanks to a $150 million marketing budget.

However, there’s no getting away from the fact that the App Store and Google Play have waaay more apps, with some gaping big-name holes on the Windows Marketplace.

Netflix will undoubtedly ease the pain a little, but Windows Phone still has a looooong way to go if it hopes to grab second place.

You can grab Netflix for Windows Phone now, as a free download from the Marketplace. Interestingly, Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) is a prerequisite, which means it won't be compatible with the upcoming Nokia Lumia 610.

Definitely a key app in my mind atm. Still hoping for playbook version.

Yet another negative point for the 610 then.

I know there is a law against being positive towards windows phone here, and when in doubt, **** it off, but I've seen nothing that says Netflix wont work on the 610.
Just because mango is a pre-requisite, it doesn't mean it wont work on the 610. Apollo is a version beyond mango, they are not mutually exclusive.
Now I'm not saying that Netflix will run on the 610, but then again I've seen nothing that says we will all wake up tomorrow either.

But still, what's a little FUD between friends eh?

Specifically, it says: 'Windows Phone 7.5 or higher.' I guess the assumption is that Tango will be 'lower' than Mango. Also, it's 'Not available for all phones.' I'm just saying ;-) Nothing against WP7 at all.

The disagreement seems to be which os the 610 will be running.

The 610 runs Tango not Apollo (which is likely to be called WP8 outside of the geek community). Tango isn't a version higher or lower than Mango, it's a different branch of WP all together.

Problem solved, the 610 won't officially support Netflix. Though that only adds to the reasons why it's a sh*t buy, there are many, many more.

Oh and Bilbob, if you look around Mobot you'll see I'm very positive about the Lumia 710. In fact only the other day I crowned it my "best sub-£150 smartphone". I then went on to say that was taking into account Android vs WP.

My own error above, I meant to say tango is beyond mango.
They are not seperate. Tango is an evolution of mango, but optimised for lower end phones. I doubt we will see mango spec phones oficialy running tango, as it is little more than the aforesaid optimisations plus bug fixes.
Now I say again, I am not saying the 610 WILL run Netflix, but nothing I havesen so far suggests it wont. And I do look!

Erm Matt "Tango isn't a version higher or lower than Tango"

lcurdie / MOD  Apr. 12, 2012 at 22:42

Call me mental, but surely the whole point in Tango is that it opens the door for lower cost phones with lower specs. It's not like Microsoft randomly decided to make a different branch of Windows Phone for the fun of it. Tango is absolutely below Mango, and Microsoft has already detailed some of the limitations.

Sorry, I'm probably arguing with no one here. Except maybe Matthew ;)

Tango isn't above or below Mango, it's a branch.

The phones which run Tango may be below Mango running phones but the OS is just different. Above/below in OS terms tends to refer to release date (Windows 7 is above Windows Vista and Windows Vista is above Windows XP, for example). The OS below Mango is NoDo, isn't it? Tango is a branch, in as much as Apollo won't be developed from Tango and Mango devices won't be updated to run Tango. Tango is for one specific type of device, it's not an update to Mango, therefore isn't above Mango.

Semantic arguments aside Tango phones are memory deficient substandard windows phones.

Oops! Typo and semantics aside, the fact is this: not all Windows Phone apps will be compatible with Tango. Whether or not that includes Netflix is, admittedly, not 100% clear at this stage.

Interesting that a company can, for all intents, write its own laws (completely disregarding multiple aspects of the constitution) by throwing money at congressmen. "And the land of the free...." my ****.

Do any of the WP7 have hdmi?

Do any of the WP7 have hdmi?
Not AFAIK, why?

Pondlife  Apr. 28, 2012 at 00:11

Just seemed that it's got netflix which is good but didn't recall any having hdmi to make it better.
