o2 and Vodafone were broadly comparable for a long time in terms of tarrifs, but only you can decice which is best for you really.
In terms of coverage? same applies really, depends on where you live and where you go/visit/work.
Coverage checkers available here http://www.mobilephonecoverage.co.uk/
I find Vodafone better than o2 where I live, but not as good as orange. Where I work (london) they're about the same, ranging from very good to excellent.
The most emotive decision I make is, which has the best handset and tarrif available come my contract renewal time. I stuck with o2 for a long time, but I moved recently so last time I switched to Orange which is better for me at home.
Some might say that Orange & t-mobile have got the coverage wrapped up with their network sharing, so why bother with anything else.

Vodafone has better 3G network. O2 has better 2G coverage. Vodafone is cheaper to roam.

Neither network is better - both are about the same. It's more of a hit and miss depending on where you are. See which one has better coverage where you intend to use phone most.

I'm with o2, never a problem with it.

Three has better 3G coverage than both of them — check Ofcom's independent coverage mapping. Orange is the next best.

In my experience it was always: Vodafone > o2 > Orange > T-Mobile. T-Mobile was mostly shocking, but Orange wasn't much worse than o2. Together I guess all 3 are much the same. 3 has far better 3g coverage, but not a lot else going for it!

I left Voda for O2 3 years ago, happy with the decision.
