Are networks obliged to fix your phone for free for the duration of the contract?

Are networks obliged to fix your phone for free (if it develops a fault as opposed to you broke it!!) for the duration of the contract? Or is there just the normal one year warranty?

Technically two years, although definitely easier in first year, but don't think contract length has much to do with it. Course if you kept the insurance up then could go with that if any difficulties.

No they are not...

SOGA applies.

6 months is all they are obliged to help you with. after those 6 months the onus is on you to get an engineers report to show the failure is a result of a manufacturing defect. the EU law which pondi mentions is a worthless heap of crap of a document SOGA is by far the more useful.
