Is the Nokia 808 PureView camera overkill?

In reality is there any need for a 41MP camera on a smartphone? Surely most photography enthusiasts will invest in a proper camera instead?

Most already have a proper camera instead. This has never stopped other phones selling largely on their cameras and this is leaps and bounds ahead of them.

The fact it's a one trick pony along with the fact the networks here in the UK don't want to stock the 808 pretty much ensures it'll be a commercial flop. Yes, there will be people who sing its praises, but for the most part it'll be totally overshadowed by "proper" smartphones, ones that do more than one thing well, and aren't running a dying OS.

Broadly ignores all the questions and answers your own. :)
I can't see that anyone is expecting it to be the best selling phone of the year, don't even really think Nokia want it to sell that well oddly.

Nothing wrong with that :p.

How many people with good or great cameras bought N95s? HTC One X? iPhone 4S? etc etc... mainly, probably because those phones have/had outstanding phone-cams at the time? 10s of millions.

I believe this questions pops up on so many sites now because of the Symbian OS!
If it was an Android or iOS device, not half as many people would express their heartfelt concern ;)

Not including present company, of course! No bias. :p

I'm happy to express (and therefore have challenged), my opinion that Symbian has had its day and needs to crawl into a corner and die quietly.

Given up the idea of actually buying the 808 then Jan?

I never had the idea of buying it at full price. Once a good used one hits these toxic shores, I'm sure curiosity will win :D

Any chance you'll get to play with one as you have the one X and S?
