Nokia bringing back N-Gage, says tipster

Nokia bringing back N-Gage, says tipsterNokia's made a few bold design moves over the year. Some have paid off. Some have been marked 'who the fudge signed that off'? (remember the Nokia 3650?!)

Well, times have changed, management's moved on, Symbian's been ditched and Samsung's overtaken the Fins in terms of share - but there's obviously a little bit of nostalgia for the past with the news that, apparently, the ill-fated N-Gage is making a return!

Yup. Us too.

It's come via MyNokiaBlog which got the tip off from someone who knows someone who works in Nokia Labs. Little is known but the handset is said to be called the Lumia X (suggesting a Windows Phone brain) and the shape said to hark back to the Nokia 5700. That means a twisting camera and also fully dedicated controls for gaming.

Here's the exact info given by the tipster, copied and pasted for your delectation:

"New Nokia Windows phone 8 to be launched in September.
I got it from my friend.
He worked at Nokia Design Studio (not mention name).
He talks about how the new equipment, both of LUMIA more interesting than Samsung, HTC and Huawei.
In addition, he said LUMIA X has a screen resolution HD Amoled Clear Black, Windows phone 8 OS, powered by Snapdragon S4, 8 millionpixel resolution camera carl zeiss lens, that can rotate the camera itself.
There are dedicated keys for playing games on the top & can be twisted to access music quickly.
He also tells of the N-GAGE is back again.
Data is designed to stay in the lab.
I was excited to try this. Not sure if it is true that much.
If the information is incorrect. Apologize for any inconvenience that this."

The fact of the matter is that this could all be complete and utter baloney. But what if it's not? The mind boggles!

I actually quite like that design idea with the camera on the side, in theory it would allow a deeper camera module so they could implement a zoom/better lens, plus holding a "pistol grip" video camera is so much easier than the usual way of taking video and holding the phone square on. Gaming controls (if properly implemented) would be nice too.

Im slowly gettting more and more impressed with Nokia again now, with the Pureview coming out and being the only true "revolution" in smartphones as the market begins to stagnate and now this, its nice to see something other than a "me too" smartphone slab with a screen thats just a little bit bigger.....

That camera design would suit the pureview rather well, so I wouldn't say it's impossible but I don't think it was a popular style.
Ngage was an idea that lead to ugly ugly devices though I think some sold well at least. Could tie in well with some sort of xbox gaming too I guess.
Sounds rather button heavy having music ones too as the trend towards no buttons continues apace.

I'm sorry... has everyone lost their collectivist mind? That photo is of a diferent, and very OLD Nokia concept. With a WP homescreen glued on.
It is fake fake fake :D

I saw this all over the web as 'serious' rumour! Hahaha g*d bring on the iPhone 5 so we can stop reading non-news :p

Guys, surely the N-Gage was a great device? Sure, it was ugly. Sure, they only thought of the fact you need to make calls with a phone, after they had finished the design. But it really pushed mobile gaming a screaming leap forward. I, for one, really hope they bring out something crazy, since we haven't had anything "new" since the advent of dual core (and even then, that wasn't an incredible step). I'd love to see Nokia get back in the ring!

We know this pic isn't genuine lol. I assumed it was just to give some visual aid to the story of what it could look like. I never for a second thought that was actually the new phone, even the pureview appears svelt in comparison. Silly Jan.

Took a look back and yep they had a three year aim for ngage for a fairly modest 6 million sales and made it to just 2 million. Mind you right now 2m is quite a lot for nokia I guess

Yeah... 2 million wouldn't be bad. I think it'd beat first 2 quarters of all of WP's first batch.

Well it was over three years sales rather than six months so not quite so good...
