Nokia concept phone stands up when called

Nokia concept phone stands up when calledA new Nokia concept phone has been revealed, with a rather interesting twist. When you receive a call, or when the alarm goes off, the phone stands up from a lying down position.

The concept phone, called the Nokia Kinetic, has a moveable weight in the bottom, with an electromagnet that effectively makes the phone stand up when you receive an alert. You can dismiss the call or alarm with a tap, and the Kinetic goes back to lying down.

The Nokia Kinetic was designed by Jeremy Innes-Hopkins at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, and overseen by tutor Silas Grant, former Senior Designer at Nokia.

Jeremy describes the phone as “a magical mobile that makes receiving a call, text, email or alarm more playful by converting digital information into kinetic movement.”

OMG... I bet you can also attach your paper clips to it what with the magnet and all. Put the innovation resources into battery design - kinetic boosters etc -, then start dreaming up things like that. And who wants that knob in their pockets?

so what happens when it is in your pocket, is it going to start trying to stand up as well? That would be rather uncomfortable. Stupid idea..would be nice for a landline but for a mobile phone think of something useful. Nokia are just getting desperate now, I can bet it will not be long before Nokia is long forgotton.

****' magnets, how do they work?

JanSt / MOD  Apr. 6, 2011 at 23:29

But seriously: a magnet of that strength...I'd imagine there'd be all sorts of interference with the radio, camera, speaker, microphone... Now back to the smut brigade :p

you're right, but these concepts were now 'revived' by Nokia ;)

...but what's been bugging me: it's a very b&o kinda style. The guy's designing for the wrong brand

@JanSt good point. I like the Scentsory one the best. Fat chance of Nokia listening to any of these other than the humdrum Dragonfly one.
