So what became of the Lumia 525, then? Turns out it's still on the way: the budget Windows Phone 8 campaigner has been leaked afresh on Chinese site Baidu, complete with a bunch of specs.
It's nothing special to look at, combining the very much standard Lumia stylings with the familiar Windows Phone UI.
As for the specs, it's pretty much what we'd expect from a follow-up to the Lumia 520 – a 4in display with a mediocre 800 x 480 resolution, a 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon 400 processor, 1GB of RAM and a 5MP camera with 720p video capabilities. The 8GB of supplied storage can be added to via the microSD card slot, plus you get the usual Microsoft freebie of 7GB of SkyDrive space too.
The battery capacity is limited to 1430mAh, but with such a modest spec it's probably not nearly as bad as it sounds.
Arguably the most interesting detail, however, is that the Lumia 525 – or at least the Chinese version, anyway, will ship together with Nokia's BH-121 stereo headphones, which were themselves leaked in the build-up to Nokia World.
With the dust still settling on Nokia's Abu Dhabi event, it seems unlikely that the Lumia 525 will be released this side of Christmas, but maybe Nokia will surprise us.
Even if it does, though, Nokia's fussy approach to launching new devices means there's every chance it won't make it to the UK at all – or only in the new year. We'll keep you posted.
